Chief Kanagatooga "Old Hop" "Standing Turkey" Moytoy

My 8g Grand Uncle, The Son of Amatoy Moytoy

Kanagatoga, Fire King of Chota. He was also known as Canacayghte, Canoreortuker, Connecorte, Emperor of Chota, Standing Turkey and Uku of Chota. He removed the English appointed rulership over the Cherokee nation, and brought all four settlement areas under Chota in 1753-1754.

Moew people were dying of disease introduced by immigrants than by any other cause, and half the population was decimated by diseases such as smallpox and measles...This was during the time when England was colonizing Virginia and Carolina commonwealths, in competition with the French, and before the colonies separated from England.

The British called him "Old Hop" because he limped. Old Hop had been crippled when a youth on the warpath."

Old Hop was advanced in age when he was chosen as Moytoy's successor. There are numerous references in the correspondence of the time indicating him as an old man. Governor Lyttleton wrote him in 1756: 'As I hear you are old and unable to walk to Charles Town, though I very much wish for it, I cannot expect to see you.'"

He had a slave or adopted son named FRENCH JOHN. He was from the Overhills, 1753-1757. He served as the chief agent of the French from Fort Toulouse (Alabama) to Chota.

Uncle to Attakullakulla "Little Carpenter" who he used as a Peace Chief and spokesman.

Doublehead was his brother (a chief who served under Dragging Canoe with John Watts, commanded the expedition against Knoxville in 1793 and was killed by Major Ridge)

Old Hop died shortly before the end of the Cherokee-English war of 1760-1761. Little Carpenter announced his death to the council as noted in "Old Frontiers", page 115: "Our Headman, Old Hop, is gone to sleep, and the Standing Turkey is come into his room, but he has little to say, being just come to the government. The other chiefs present will remember how strongly Old Hop recommended to the nation to live in peace and friendship with the white people." (Note: The Standing Turkey referred to in this paragraph is the nephew of Old Hop.)

From Old Frontiers, pg 46: "Old Hop had a nephew, also named Standing Turkey, an active warrior who at his uncle's death served a short time as his successor. It was the younger Standing Turkey who conducted a four day assault upon Fort Loudoun in 1760, and who signed the articles of capitulation of the stronghold."

In old Cherokee culture there were generally three leaders in each town/village. The Red Chief was the "War Chief," he dealt with war, and was in charge of trading and other outside contact. The White Chief was the "Peace Chief," he led during peace time and controlled civil affairs. There was also a High Priest or conjuror. A good example is the old city of Echota. This town was headed by Attakullakulla (white chief), Oconostota (red chief), and Old Hop (high priest).

Old Hop in his talk to Demere, gave his unusual evidence of patriotism. He said: "I am now old and lie upon a bad bearskin. My life is not more than an inch long, and I know not when a bullet may cut it short. I want my brothers Captains Demere and Stuart to remember that the Great Warrior, Oconostota, and his brother [Amo-Scossite?], are the only two men in the nation that ought to be thought of after my death. "It is true that Willenawah and the Little Carpenter are my nephews, but I do not know how they would behave. If I had not remembered what I owe to a country I love, and had in mind to behave like a father, I would recommend my two sons, but I know them to be incapable, and biased by every lie that comes. I do not know how they will turn out, but I do know the others, for drunk or sober, they always admonish the Indians to love the white people."

  1. Cherokee Chief Standing Turkey is of interest in this area of Cherokee history and genealogy, as is Turkeytown (more than one) near places like the present city of Newton,NC. So is the Hopi Tribe (Hop) and places like Gobbler's Knob, KY, at Viper Kentucky on a Cherokee trail into southeast Kentucky.

    5. Cultured Country Girl, I would suggest that you find a powwow nearest you, preferably an inter-tribal one, and volunteer to work it as staff, in whatever capacity they need. This will give you a chance to get to know a little more about the cultures. The reception you will get at first will be very cold and rude, until they understand where your heart is. But, if they learn to trust you, they are very warm and loving with their friends. As far as connecting your family - You have to find a relative listed on the Dawes, usually, to be admitted. YOU have to supply all the supporting documents showing your relationship to the person in question and to your common ancestor(s), as well as the Dawes number, and any proofs of birth, marriage, etc that you can find to submit. Most people don't realize it, but you are usually required to LIVE on the reservation of the Nation to which you belong. The only other way to get in that I know, is to be adopted by an already standing tribal member (or intermarriage).
The Cherokee Nation will send a packet with forms, rules, and such to you, but you have to submit all of the names, documents, etc. The Cherokee Nation also has a website online - Cherokee.org. Even if you are not a Cherokee Tribal Member, you can join the site to access the history, culture, language, etc. Hope this helps.

The names of family, Wooten, Rogers, Perkins, Floyds, Mullins, Smith, Malones, Carters, Robinson, Crums. Some times spelled, Mullings, Mullens. Essary, Ussery. 23. Hi, my name is Kathy Hudnall (Copeland) I am researching my family tree and Christopher Choate and Prudence Staley are my 9th great grandparents. I am confused about what I have found. I have found conflicting parental information on Prudence. One is she is the daughter of Thomas and Ellen Staley and the other she is the daughter of Chief Moytoy Kanagatoga and Su Gi Wolf of the wolf clan. I have had my DNA tested and show no native american. But I guess the lineage could be too far down. If anyo e can help me with this it would be most appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is possible that Thomas and Ellen were the "English" names they either chose or were given by the settlers at that time. Happened throughout history because it made it easier for the people moving to the "New World" to identify the natives they came in contact with.

I am a direct descendant of Prudence and of course her parents. Prudence and Christopher Choate's son Squire Thomas Choate or Thomas Squire Choate (not sure of the order of his name) is the child that my lineage is connected through.

Kana Toga Moy Toys daughter Mary Jane (dob: 1710) is my 4th great grandmother and my son's DNA profile shows him as 2.4 Indigenous American. I am having my DNA tested as soon as I can get back to the states through ancestory because they have more markers than some other dna testing sites.

    1. Dawn, I saw your posting of 2018 and that your last name is Mantooth Family verbal history has been passed down that two Monteith bros came to America and one married an Indian and changed his name to Mantooth. I now believe that the brother, John Monteith, changed his name to John Mantooth, MY DIRECT ANCESTOR. I have done VERY EXTENSIVE Mantooth research since my great grandmother was a Mantooth who moved to Texas in the 1840's with her family. And I have lots of information on the Mantooths in Cocke Co., TN. I will be happy to share what I have with you.

Mary was a granddaughter of Isaac Thomas (Rev War fame; Indian Trader at Chota c 1755-outbreak of Anglo-Cherokee War) by his Cherokee wife Elizabeth Ahleeskwayti Betsy Mulligan, who later married a GOINS. Betsy was still living on the 1830 census of Sevier County, Tennessee, with her grandson, John IEF Thomas. 36. Shawnee Heritage X Surnames S & T 1700-1750 by Don Greene, Family #394. Little Turkey, son of Old Hop & Sugi Rainmaker; Family #396. Young Turkey, son of Old Hop & Sugi Rainmaker - says Old Hop was KILLED 1761 TN; Family #403. Sugi Turkey aka Granny Hopper, daughter of Old Hop & Sugi Rainmaker. There are at least 10 volumes by Don Greene, all called Shawnee Heritage, then Vol #, then years, later ones have surnames breakdown. Some available on Amazon and other places. There are a few problems with this research in some areas, but it has integrated pretty well with what I have already. It gives the aka names that each person has been found under, I. E. 403. Turkey, Sugi aka Grasshopper Hop - Susannah Hop - Sukey Hopper - Susannah Hopper - Grasshopper Turkey - Granny Hopper. Mr Greene seems to have accessed the Shawnee side of records, as well as the Cherokee side, though there are NO inline sources, nor numbers linking to sources, just all at the end of the book. Use with caution, but has more information on some of the persons of interest than I have found in one place elsewhere. One problem that sticks out to me at least is some of the marriages to closely related people that has caused me to start tracking clans. I don't believe some of the marriages he listed are truth.
