Nancy Moytoy of the Wolf Clan (born ca. 1683)

Daughter of Amatoy Moytoy 1683 - 1741 My 8g Grandmother
Nancy Moytoy of the Wolf Clan (born ca. 1683) was a member of the Cherokee/Shawnee Moytoy-Carpenter dynasty. She was the eldest daughter of the Cherokee chief Moytoy I of Chota and the mother of Attacullaculla. She was the wife of Moytoy III (Savannah Tom Carpenter), who was Attacullaculla's father, and later to his adopted brother Moytoy IV (Raven of Chota Carpenter). Her mother was Quatsy of Tellico, of the Wolf Clan.

Nancy Moytoy was the daughter of Chief Amatoya Moytoy I, she married White Owl Raven who was a captive Algonquin, and who was adopted into the clan, and raised by another Cherokee Woman named Nancy.

Children of Nancy Moytoy and White Owl Raven:

1. Chief Attakullakulla-born 1708 in Seivers Island,Tn and died May 1777,In Natchestown, NC which is now Tennessee.

  1. Note that Cherokee Chief Dragging Canoe is also listed as a son of Chief Attakullakulla. Attakullakulla apparently signed the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals, ceding parts of Cannatuckahoe (Kentucky) to the Colonials, or early United States. His son, Dragging Canoe, also known as The Canoe, left the Sycamore Treaty Grounds, refused to sign, and went on the warpath from Kentucky for years.

  3. I love studying my ancestry thru Moytoy and SuGhi and I find more info all the time. I was thrilled to find Moytoys parents and grandparents.I was also suprised to find out that they were Euros. The Native bloodline finds its way back in thru some Cherokee and Shawnee spouses. Its a great history, there are a lot of different takes on it but Im just proud to be who and what I am always. Its so exciting to make new discoveries . I love to think we are breathing air they all breathed and their blood pulses like fire thru our veins.I pray that our heritage, our culture and languages never die. I am from the line of Elizabeth McDaniel and James Thomas Essary.

  4. One version of Moytoy, Maytoy, Maytoya, Maytog, Maytag, etc, is the Cherokee spelling: Mo'Doi or similar spellings. This confirms traditional Cherokee stories and the fact of the Cherokee Maytoy line is provable up until this very day, including the Doublehead and other lines related to Maytoy like Aaron Redbird Brock. Europeans married into the line, but are not the the origin of the line. The same is true for various links to the Cherokee Emperor(s)lines connected to the Cherokee Uku and Uchi (Yuchi) and Natchez(Natchers) and Indian American Sun Emperor lines with ties to somewhat like the Aztec related to the Toltec (Tali)and Taki (Tackett)Cherokee lines. Indians are the origin of the lines.

  5. Axchuse my anglish in the above posting, the point is that the Cherokee Indian, and Native American Cherokee and various relatives from full blood to major and minor bloods, are very real then and now, including Doublehead (Doublhead and Head and other spelllings)family lines linked to the Maytoy (Mo'Doi)lines.

  15. Ancestry.com's new app, "We're Related," just made the claim that Peyton Manning and I are both descended from Quatsy of the Wolf Clan. This was news to me. Did she have a daughter named Mary Jane and a granddaughter named Martha? Then it picks up with people I have in my tree. They were in the right place at the right time, that much I do know. thanks for any insight.

  16. I found an ancestor named Arabella Moytoy who married a free mulatto man. He was a soldier named John carter. in the French and Indian War and met his wife in NC or Tenn. They moved to new bern to establish a refuge for , indian, free blks and mulattos in eastern nc. The town of Harlow NC is where they setlled. I always wondered about the moytoy name. She must be a descendent from one of the Moytoy men as its not a common name.

    1. Regarding your post of June 16, we have very similar questions but neither of us swamped by replies. Like you, I have an ancestor with an Anglo name but shown as child of Nancy Moytoy Attakullakulla Wolf (exact name and spelling varies) who was married to White Owl Raven Carpenter. One potential match for my search is that a person named "Tame Doe" is listed at the top of this Blog as a daughter who died in 1760. Unfortunately I have no answer for you but will keep searching.
      Good luck!

  22. A person named Eleanor Stubblefield, aka "Tame Doe" in some sites, is shown as a daughter of Nancy Moytoy Attakullakulla Wolf in Family Search nut her last name hints or maybe shouts that she is not Native American. What do you know about her?
    Thanks!

  25. I traced my ancestry back to my 7th great grandfather Amatoya Moytoy and his wife Quatsy (Woman of the Wolf Clan) Tellico and their daughter Elizabeth married a Timothy Williams from IIangolen Wales.
But I keep finding information that Amatoya Moytoy is fictional and his story is all fabricated so I stopped looking into my ancestry. Now I'm white so white I can't enter a department store during a white sale, because people try to purchase me, but I am not looking for perks of having indigenous native ancestry I just want my children and grandchildren to know they had great ancestors over 200 years and who were the first and greatest inhabitants of this country.. If anyone can help me with information on the true existence or nonexistence of Amatoya Moytoy it would be greatly appreciated. My email is (buddyray11@gmail.com). Sorry for my incessant rambling.. Thank you..

  26. Buddy Williams Sr, I am a descendent as well. I have seen postings saying fictional and real. I looked a little further into it, and it says some of the stories may be embellished a little bit, but without all the oh’s and ah’s, from what I have found, he is real.
